Is Your College Student Still Covered by Your Insurance?

For families with a student heading to college, August comes with a pretty long checklist. Tuition. Textbooks. Bedding. A mini fridge. About 14 trips to the store for things you somehow forgot.

But there’s one thing that probably isn’t on the list: insurance.

Whether your student is living in a dorm, renting an apartment or commuting from home, it’s worth checking their coverage before the school year begins.

What about all their stuff?

Laptops, phones, TVs, clothing and other belongings can add up quickly.

If your student is living in a dorm, their belongings may have some coverage under your homeowners policy. But coverage and limits vary, so don’t assume everything is protected.

If they’re renting an apartment or house off campus, renters insurance may be the better option. It can help protect their belongings and may also provide liability coverage.

Are they taking a car?

Where your student lives and keeps their vehicle during the school year can affect your auto insurance.

If they’re attending college away from home without a vehicle, tell your insurance agent that, too. Depending on the situation, there may be coverage or premium considerations you’ll want to discuss.

And if your student recently bought a vehicle or is taking a different one to school, make sure your policy is updated before move-in day.

Have things changed since last year?

College often brings plenty of changes from one year to the next. A new apartment. A different vehicle. A roommate. An internship. A move to another city.

Those changes can also change your insurance needs.

Before you load up the car and head to campus, take a few minutes to talk with your insurance agent. A quick coverage review now can help make sure there aren’t any surprises later.
